HSCD 590G Introduction to Substance Use and Co-occurring Disorders

In this course, students gain an initial understanding of substance use and co-occurring disorders and how they are addressed. Emphasis is placed on understanding multiple conceptualizations of the disorders and their treatment. The fundamental knowledge gained and resources explored in this course help prepare students for advanced studies in substance use or co-occurring disorders counseling.

  • Identify and illustrate fundamental definitions and conceptualizations of substance use disorders.
  • Identify and illustrate fundamental definitions and conceptualizations of co-occurring substance use and mental health disorders.
  • Identify the variety of professional services available to those affected by substance use or co-occurring disorders.
  • Explore the variety of community resources available to those affected by substance use or co-occurring disorders.
