HSCD 100 Use of Addictive Drugs: An Introduction

This course covers fundamental physiological, psychological, and sociological aspects of use and abuse of psychoactive drugs. Drug categories covered are: narcotics, stimulants, depressants, hallucinogens, alcohol, marijuana and inhalants.

Learning outcomes

General

  • Become familiar with the incident (rate of occurrence) and prevalence (extent or how wide spread) of drug abuse in the community, as demonstrated by reading assignments, and exams.
  • Become familiar with the physiological, psychological, and sociological effects of alcohol and other commonly abused drugs, as demonstrated by reading assignments and exams.
  • Gain some insight into treatment approaches and other resources for psychoactive drug abuse problems, as demonstrated by reading assignments and exams.
