Biography

Mental Health & Substance Use Therapist | Adjunct Faculty |

Summer and Fall: Su25 HSCD 660I-18 Developing Specialized Co-Occurring Programming for Emerging Adults

Humayun, who goes by Humi, has worked in a variety of mental health settings, including community mental health, outpatient care, and residential treatment. His clinical experience includes supporting individuals experiencing anxiety, depression, trauma, substance use and co-occurring concerns, relationship and family challenges, academic stress, and significant life transitions.

Humi approaches counseling from a collaborative, strengths-based, culturally responsive, and person-centered perspective. He draws from evidence-based approaches, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), mindfulness, and solution-focused interventions. He enjoys helping students explore how their thoughts, emotions, relationships, culture, identity, and lived experiences influence their overall well-being.

Humi also brings a holistic, mind-body perspective to counseling. When it fits a student’s interests and needs, he may incorporate wellness practices such as mindfulness, breathing, movement, and healthy routines while exploring how physical health, emotions, and overall wellness influence one another.

As a Marine Corps veteran, Humi understands some of the experiences and transitions faced by veterans, service members, and military-connected students. He also has extensive experience providing therapy within Somali, Arab, Southwest Asian, and Muslim communities. These experiences inform his culturally responsive approach, while his practice remains welcoming and inclusive of students from every identity, background, belief system, and life experience.

As a Metro State alumnus, Humi understands that college can involve much more than academics. He is familiar with the realities of navigating higher education and financial aid while balancing work, relationships, family and cultural expectations, and other responsibilities. He enjoys supporting students as they explore their identities, make career decisions, and transition into different stages of life.

Students meeting with Humi can expect a warm and nonjudgmental space where they can be themselves, identify their strengths, and work toward practical and meaningful goals.
